Senate candidate clams up over Navy record

SPRINGFIELD (AP) — Republican Senate candidate Mark Kirk’s military record was once such a political asset that he’d mention it at every turn, referring to himself in news releases and his campaign literature as “congressman and Navy veteran Mark Kirk.” Now, he’ll hardly talk about it all.

Macomb Police are investigating accusations that county Commissioner Joan Flynn stole about 100 pieces of campaign literature Tuesday that her opponent, Commissioner Phil DiMaria, placed on doors and porches of homes. Flynn is firing back, saying DiMaria offered her money to back out of the race, a contention he denies.

It’s hard to know which man has had the more remarkable life. Per Wästberg had his first national newspaper column at 12. He fought apartheid in South Africa, edited Sweden’s largest daily newspaper, founded the Swedish section of Amnesty International, and is now chairman of the Nobel Committee for Literature.
