Saramago ashes to lie under Lisbon olive tree

The ashes of Portugal’s Nobel literature prize winner Jose Saramago will be buried in a Lisbon park under an olive tree brought from his native village, his foundation said on its website on Saturday.

It’s hard to know which man has had the more remarkable life. Per Wästberg had his first national newspaper column at 12. He fought apartheid in South Africa, edited Sweden’s largest daily newspaper, founded the Swedish section of Amnesty International, and is now chairman of the Nobel Committee for Literature.

SOUTH African writer Nadine Gordimer, winner of the 1991 Nobel Literature Prize, is to travel to Havana to participate in the 19th International Book Fair, which opens on February 11 in the Cuban capital.

MOSCOW, Tuesday, May 31–Boris Pasternak, noted Russian poet, author of the controversial novel “Doctor Zhivago” and winner of the 1958 Nobel Prize for Literature, died in his sleep last night, family friends reported. He was 70 years old.
